Newsletter Articles and Bulletin Inserts
Publicize the issues about mental illness in your church bulletin or newsletter.
Two good times of the year to do this might be May, which is Mental Health Month, or during the first week in October, which is Mental Illness Awareness Week.
It is better to have a series of short articles on the subject rather than one or two longer articles. A series, at least five, keeps the information readable by not giving too much information to digest at once. It also keeps the issue in the minds of people rather than giving them a one time exposure soon forgotten like yesterday's news. A series also gives a chance to explain the facts, the moral implications and what we as faith communities can do.
Pathways to Promise, an interfaith mental illness ministry, has preprinted bulletin inserts that you may want to use. Click here to order these materials.
Or you may want to produce your own bulletins or newsletter inserts. Here are some sample newsletter articles you might want to customize for your faith community. When you preparing any kind of communication for people in your congregation, be sure you use "people first language."
